Here we go. Again

I’ve built websites on and off since 1995 and, although time-consuming, the process can be interesting. Much like writing a paper or grant application, creating web pages can really help to clarify one’s thinking. Many a brilliant idea becomes an obvious turd when written down.

However, while building a website is something to look forward to, maintaining a website is a whole other kettle of fish. I had a personal website for many years that focused on my art projects but, as I spent more time working for my company, my interest faded away. And so did iWeb, the simple and fun Mac app I had used. So when some random change at my ISP broke the site I didn’t even have a tool to update it, and my website disappeared completely.

This year we are not travelling as we are having knees replaced and cataracts removed. I felt it was time to resurrect the art website, and also add other material I have. This time I am using Wix. I usually prefer native apps and try to avoid cloud-based programs. Sometime that is not possible and a few years ago I had created my wife’s website (jerenatobiasen.ca) with Wordpress. That was proving hard to maintain and both of us wanted something easier. My niece Bonnie Joyce (bonniejoycestudio.ca) is a Wix expert so we employed her to design the new site. I thought I should also use Wix so that I might be better equipped to help Jerena in the future, but do so in a way that would allow me to punt the website to over Bonnie when the time comes.
